The most important concerning the crisis in every international summit is the environmental crisis in this era.

A plastic water bottle is one of the reasons for this crisis.

According to the Container Recycling Institute, approximately 50 billion water bottles have been consumed every year and this number continues to increase. Furthermore, there are billions of tons of plastic waste in the oceans, killing sea creatures.

In 2019, Textile Exchange, the global non-profit organization https://textileexchange.org/ , has started challenging over 50 big textile companies to grow their consumption of recycled polyester textiles. The goal of this project is 45%, approximately 17.1 million metric tons, of all polyester waste will be recycled by 2025 and reach 90% of polyester recycled volume by 2030.

What is the recycled polyester fabric?

Recycled polyester, or rPET, is acquired by melting down to a tiny flake of plastic waste from the plastic bottle after cleaning and removing all labels and caps. Then press it through spinnerets and convert them into recycled polyester filament. The production of virgin polyester filament can be used as filament yarn or cut into staple fiber and re-spinning it into recycled polyester yarn. Finally, these recycled yarns will be knitted to a new recycled polyester fabric.

The Standard of Recycled PET Fabric

The Global Recycling Standard (GRS) is an international voluntary product standard for monitoring and substantiating the content of recycled materials in a final product. Control Union Certifications were originally established in 2008 and ownership was transferred to the Textile Exchange on the 1st of January 2011

The standard applies to the entire supply chain and addresses traceability, environmental essentials, social requirements, chemical content, and labeling. With GRS certification, Jong Stit ensures that the company customers commit to the truth of raw materials and support a circular economy that reduces waste by making new fabric.

What is the difference between a polyester fabric and recycled polyester fabric?

Virgin polyester fabric is created by Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), a combination of extracted coal, ethylene from petroleum, air, and water formed from a chemical reaction under extremely high heat. However, there are several advantages of polyester fabrics over natural fabrics. For example, oil absorb, fire-resistant, shrinking-resistant and easily dry.

Recycled polyester fabric, as mentioned previously, it was made of a plastic bottle. Therefore, it denied consuming natural resources such as petroleum and coal extraction. Numerous researches have published that the fabrics and textiles made from recycled polyester can repeatedly recycle without affecting the qualities and properties of the fiber. The quality of the recycled polyester fabric is as high as our other virgin polyester fabric in terms of fire resistance, comfort, and appearance.

Moreover, the recycled polyester fabric can add anti-virus and antibacterial functions while improving durability and respect for the environment.

However, recycling single-use plastics significantly decreases greenhouse gas emissions compared to producing virgin polyester because its production requires 59 percent less energy and water usage during the production process when compared to virgin polyester fabric.
