What is
Terry Fabric?
Terry Fabric is made from microfibers and shaped into continuous loops. The loops that extend from the fabric bottom are called piles. Those piles help the fabric absorbent and soft. The longer the loops, the better absorbency increases. Likewise, a higher density of the loops enhances the soft feeling.
History of
Terry Fabric
“Terry” is derived from the French “Tiré” which means to pull out. Terry Fabric was invented in the 1840s and used widely in 1848 due to the British textile industrial revolution. In the beginning, Towel Terry was made of silk and then cotton, which was preferable and made the towel became popular. Later, the manufacturer added more synthetic materials, such as Polyester, to make it more durable and flexible while absorbing the water.
How to produce
Terry Fabric?
As mentioned above, Terry fabric features uncut loops or piles that stand up from the cloth base. The fabric can form various patterns, divided into 2 methods.
Weaving
However, the oldest and most widely used is yarn intersection from 2 directions: vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft). The process is also used 2 warp beams. One beam to warp the base and another to create the loops or piles. These thread loops function as water absorbency and give a soft hand feel. This will help the fabric structure stronger and prevent frayed thread.
Knitting
Similar to the circular knitting technique, there will be 2 yarns - ground and pile yarn. The machine creates a pile side into loops, making it soft to the touch, good absorbing and stretchy.

Terry Cloth
French Terry
Terry Cloth is a fabric with pile loops all over the fabric and can be divided into single and double sides brushed.
1 side brushed
This Terry Cloth contains pile loops on one side, while the ground side is flat. The ground side can be brushed to make a smoother hand feel similar to Fleece Fabric. This Terry has two different textures and is perfect for cover cloth.
2 sides brushed
Terry Cloth or Towel Terry has long loops on both sides. It can have equal length and amount or only one side can have longer loops. The prolonged side will be softer and serve as an absorbent, helping you dry water from the skin quickly. This fabric is ideal for producing towels, bathrobes and bath mats. It is also suitable for making clothes from loungewear to babywear.
It's unlike the original Terry Fabric because French Terry has 2 different textures. One side is soft and flat, while the opposite side has loops just like the Terry Cloth.
French Terry
This form makes it appropriate for clothing such as sweatpants, fashionable clothing, sweater or sportswear. French Terry can be made of various clothing types, good and comfortable for any weather conditions.
